They were between towns on one of the largest stretches of plain in Dwarfland. They hadn't seen any animals for the last two days and Jac could understand why - it was only the beginning of winter and the ground was all but frozen. In midwinter it would be covered in deep drifts of snow.
'Hardly enough work for one, let alone two. I think I'll have a snooze.' Danel grinned at Jac and pulled his hat over his face to keep out the wind.
'You've not done any,' Jac laughed, poking his friend in the ribs.
'Ah, but you put the frogs in the girls' wagon,' Danel replied, lifting his hat briefly.
'It was your idea, your sisters, and your frogs,' Jac persisted, then gave up with a smile. 'Though it was funny watching them running round screaming.'
