By ERIC WALTERS
She opened her mouth to say something and then closed it again. Silence from Beth . . . now that was something I didn't hear very often. She must really be sick. I felt bad.
"Remember when we were little," I said, "and we used to think the ride was really long because we couldn't wait to get to the island?" Beth didn't answer. "And we used to talk about all the things we wanted to do when we got there. Do you remember?"
She chuckled a bit, and then slowly and slightly nodded her head.
"And we'd go to the beach and spend almost all our time there swimming and making sand castles and running through the dunes and playing games and pretending and imagining all sorts of things. Do you remember?"
"Of course I do," she said softly.
"And on the way back we'd stop at the Dairy Queen for a cone, or the bakery for fresh-out-of-the-oven buns or fresh-made doughnuts," I continued.
"Please," Beth said, holding up a hand. "No talk about food . . . please."
