By ERIC WALTERS
The worst fights, though, were about Brent. Brent was Beth's "boyfriend." Mom said Beth could have "boys who were friends," but she was much too young to have a "boyfriend." And even if she did have a boyfriend it shouldn't be somebody who was three years older than she was. After fighting about it for two whole days, and then not talking at all for another two, they reached an agreement: Beth would pretend she didn't have a boyfriend, and Mom would pretend not to notice that she did. Maybe it wasn't the most honest arrangement, but I didn't care because it stopped them fighting, at least for a day or two.
I leaned close to Beth. "Too bad Brent isn't here to see you," I whispered, so softly that Mom couldn't hear me. She looked up at me but didn't say a word. "He would never have seen you looking so lovely."
