She lifted her head off her hands long enough to give me a nasty look. Without her saying a word I knew what she was thinking - "you little suck up." She always accused me of trying to get on Mom's good side, doing things to please her, being a "mama's boy." Maybe that was true, but only compared to Beth. Lately she seemed to go out of her way to fight with Mom. It should have been the two of them who promised to try to get along. They were always bickering about something.
