I shuffled the deck again. "Come on, it's a good trick. It'll take your mind off things."
"It isn't my mind I want off of things. It's my stomach."
"Just try. Cut the deck and-"
"If you don't leave me alone Sam I'll show you a trick."
"A trick. What sort of trick?"
"I'll make something appear . . . all over your shoes, she said as she belched loudly and covered her mouth. "Or better still, I'll make an eleven-year-old brat disappear . . . over the side of the boat."
"Beth, be nice to your little brother," Mom warned as she walked up unexpectedly. She'd been outside on the deck.
"I'm trying to be nice."
"Then try harder. You both promised not to fight and bicker. You said you'd get along the way you used to get along."
"I'm getting along," I said smugly, smirking at Beth. "We never got along," Beth answered.
