By ERIC WALTERS
I shuffled the deck of cards and then cut. Next I dealt five cards onto the bench beside me. I flipped over the top card; it was the ace of hearts. I smiled to myself. It was where I'd put it in the deck, sixth from the top. For the trick to work it had to be in exactly the right place. Carefully, I gathered up the cards and repositioned the ace in the correct spot.
"Beth, can I show you a trick?" I asked my sister.
"Leave me alone, Sam," she answered without taking her head out of her hands.
"But it's a good trick. You'll want to see it!"
"All I want to see is the end of this boat ride," she muttered.
"You're not enjoying the ride?"
She burped and moaned slightly. I guess she wasn't. The ferry ride was only an hour long, but as soon as we'd left the harbour and headed for the open seas it had gotten really rough.
