By CAROL KRUEGER
Under the cabin bed, Deveau found a sword. Was it his imagination, or were there bloodstains on it?
Last, they found a logbook. The most recent entry was made on November 25 - ten days before.
In another cabin, washing was still hanging on a line. There were boots, pipes, and razors, all waiting for their owners. Six months' supply of food and water lay in storage, completely untouched.
"The ship is sound," said Deveau. "We could get her dry in no time."
A survey of the ship's instruments had revealed that the compass was broken. The sextant, the chronometer, and some papers were missing.
"Someone's taken them," said Wright. "I wonder why the sailors have abandoned a perfectly good ship?"
"I don't know. It's a mystery," replied Deveau. "This ship has been sailing herself."
