By NANCY KLIMA
Natty plopped her bag of library books on the front step and sank down beside it. Her dog, Prince, settled in for a long snooze. Natty thought about searching through her books for a good mystery novel to read, but she knew she had read them all. She sighed. It was only the first Tuesday of the holidays, and already it looked as if it was going to be a long dull summer.
The biggest house on the other side of the street was quiet, as usual. It belonged to Mrs Lockgate, who had lived there forever.
Prince sat up again, his ears pointed. Down the street, an iron gate creaked open, and Mrs Lockgate strode through it. "Young lady," she called as she crossed the road towards Natty's house, "come and see what that dog of yours has been up to!"
