Edoras (Mt Potts, near Methven): "Edoras those courts are called," said Gandalf, "and Meduseld is the golden hall. There dwells Theoden son of Thengel, King of the Mark of Rohan." And there the wizard and Aragorn go to convince Theoden to ride to war.
Rohan (Ida Valley and Deer Park Heights, near Queenstown): Also called the Riddermark, it is the wide open grasslands and rolling hill country where the Riders of Rohan, er, ride.
Fangorn Forest (Mavora Lakes, near Te Anau): "A shaggy old forest", as Pippin calls it, Fangorn is the home of the tree-like Ents.
Helm's Deep (Dry Creek Quarry, Hutt Valley): In this ancient fortress the warriors of Rohan make their stand against the army of Urak-Hai in what promises to be an eye-popping battle scene.
Isengard (Glenorchy): A fortress built by the Dunedain of Gondor, Aragorn's ancestors, it's now controlled by the traitorous wizard Saruman who rules from his tower, Orthanc.
The Dead Marshes (near Queenstown and in studio): Where Gollum leads Frodo and Sam towards Mordor to hide from the (not quite) all-seeing eye of Sauron. A desolate, misty land where faces of the dead from a battle long ago stare up from beneath the marshy waters.
Ithilien (Ohakune and Twelve Mile Delta): Frodo, Sam and Gollum then have to pass through "the garden of Gondor, now desolate, and there are discovered by brave Faramir, guarding his realm's borders from the servants of Sauron."
