By PHILIP TEMPLE, Illustrator CHRIS GASKIN
Tomtits began to fight with kiwis. Paradise ducks argued with pipits. Krikta and the keas began wrestling with falcons. Birds stole berries from one another"s beaks. They picked more than they needed and hid them in the hollows of trees. The birds lost their songs and there was only screeching and screaming in the tree-tops. So many wings were beaten in anger that the first wind began to blow. The trees shook and swayed, and nearly all the flower nectar was spilt on the earth. berries were shaken off and trampled under the stamping feet of moas and giant wekas.
