'The van hurtled over a bridge across a wide shingly river, and began zooming towards the lion-coloured low hills ahead. `Took the other three kids up yesterday. Hey, I forgot. I'm supposed to check you aren't a God's Soldier in disguise.'

I told Sophie I wasn't. God's soldier? Tell you about that later, too.

Actually, I couldn't imagine any God's Soldiers knowing where Mt Dauntless was. I didn't, before the launch station was built. After 15 minutes of being thrown sideways as Sophie shot around a corner, and upwards as Sophie crashed over a pothole, I was wondering if it existed after all. There was nothing but round hills covered with tussock, and a huge bowl of blue sky down which a hawk was sliding. Then we skidded around another corner, and I saw the rocket.
