By PHILIP ARDAGH
Everyone, even the servants, went to the front of the Manor House to see Tom on his way.
Lady Ann's hanky wasn't only wet from the chewing now, but also from her tears. "Be brave and true, Tom," she said.
Tom's father gave him a hug. Then Able Morris leant forward on his huge horse, grabbed Tom by the hand and yanked him up onto the animal's back.
Tom sat behind Able Morris and secretly hoped that he wouldn't ride too fast. There was no way that he could put his arms around the man's waist to hold on. It was far too wide.
Able Morris turned his head - squishy hat and all. He looked at Tom. "It's time we were off, Master Tom!"
With 'goodbyes' and 'good lucks' ringing in their ears, Tom, Able Morris and Able's horse, Ferdy, set off to ride to the castle.
