The runway isn't the only place to see a show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (or any fashion week for that matter). There's a sartorial spectacular going on just outside the venue, and for many it's just as exciting and interesting (if not more so) than the collections shown inside.
This year was my fifth in Sydney for the Spring/Summer collections, and I've got to say that the street-style ante gets upped every single time I go back. It's become a sort of sport, street style photography. Much akin to bird watching - an attractive, well-dressed editor/stylist/blogger/model/fashion celebrity (such as New Zealand's own Natalie Cantell) will amble (gracefully) down the stairs at the entrance of Carriageworks and within seconds, photographers will flock. And snap. So much snapping. There's a bit of photographer FOMO, I think - you never want someone to get that shot YOU could've gotten. You've got to be incredibly quick and always alert. Constantly looking for those stand-outs in bright colours, full on prints and backless pieces. This fashion week baby it was pink that was a winner, as were full skirts.
For the last three days I've been getting amongst it. Hovering around (and getting in the way of!) the pros - Tommy Ton, Phil Oh and the like - here's what I saw:
