It's amazing how many different kinds of stones there are really. And all sizes. Tess used to stagger home from school with a bag full of them. They weighed down the pockets of her jacket.
I quite liked the stones. Some of them had nice shapes. They were smooth or rough. You could nurse a smooth, round in your pocket and that was rather nice.
They were all shades of grey, brown and black. Some of them had flecks of different colours. Some were like little chunks of marble. We broke one stone open and it had a milky middle.
Tess spent hours laying the stones out on her bedroom floor and then packing them into her boxes. She stuck labels on the boxes. Mum had to write them for her but Tess knew what they all were.
