The backyard was almost under water. "Wow!" said Joseph. Then he remembered. "But what about the picnic?" he wailed. "Dad said it would be fine today."
"Oh, Joseph, your father can't control the weather," said Mum, laughing and giving him a hug. "But we haven't forgotten. Happy birthday, my great big eight-year-old! Now look, we can't have a picnic in this weather, but we'll think of something else to do instead. In the meantime, how about some breakfast?"
"I'm having cornflakes," said Joseph's little brother Anthony, who was already at the table.
"I'll have the same, please," said Joseph. "Where's Dad? Is he still asleep?"
"Goodness no!" said Mum. "He went out early to help the Masons move their animals in case there's a flood. Your sisters have gone with him. We'll give you your presents when they come back."
