It's spooky season, which only means one thing - who's going to win best-dressed? Photo / Warner Bros.
Halloween has crept up on us yet again and, if you’re anything like me, it’s been another year of last-minute outfit runs, skimming through Pinterest and trips to my dad’s closet to search for something that screams “nostalgic and terrifying”.
For all you disorganised Halloween buffs who love the holiday but hate the brain power that precedes the “best-dressed” spooks, don’t ghost your Halloween party on account of having nothing to wear and scare.
We’ve taken a deep dive into the darkest crevices of pop culture to bring you the certified best looks come October 31 - and what’s really frightening is how easy these fits are to recreate.
So, from surfing penguins to iconic ‘90s couples, here are our top picks for the scariest night of the year.
This comes as no surprise - we have all been living in aBarbie world since Margot Robbie graced our screens, flexed her feet and made every girl’s night in the recent Greta Gerwig flick.
And there are so many directions one could go in when trying to emulate her plastic-fantastic life.
From Robbie’s roller-skating unitard to her pink fluffy heels, which nearly every Barbie fan had a pair of when they were 5 years old, don yourself in pink paraphernalia and ‘80s prints for your big blowout party come Halloween.
Partner Up: Ryan Gosling’s Ken in his Mojo Dojo Casa House fur coat, bandana and sunnies.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock - or deleted your TikTok account for the umpteenth time - you’ll no doubt have seen this Surf’s Up costume on your feed, as well as the accompanying monologue of our favourite surfing penguin.
An easy costume to replicate, dress yourself in black and white, stick some yellow feathers on your eyebrows and rehearse your lines for this Halloween’s MVP (Most Vivacious Penguin) award.
Partner Up: Chicken Joe, dressed in a chicken costume with a coconut bra, hula skirt and a laidback attitude.
Wednesday Addams from Wednesday
It’s time to rock those Year 9 piggy tails, your resting b**** face and some quirky dance moves. This Wednesday costume is the perfect pick for Halloween this year - especially because you can be a grump and blame it on “staying in character”.
With a white-collared shirt, a black dress and a mysterious persona, you too can be the torturous darling of the Addams Family.
Partner Up: Enid Sinclair in all of her rainbow-coloured apparel.
Suit up with some sunnies, a nerf gun and a neuralyser (AKA a toothbrush wrapped in tin foil) and “protect the earth from the scum of the universe” on your big night of spooks.
Partner Up: Agent K - in the exact same costume (plus an inflatable alien, perhaps?).
J. Robert Oppenheimer from Oppenheimer
Another film that broke the box office, the Cillian Murphy-starring Oppenheimer, was a masterpiece to behold.
This costume is easy to find while rummaging through the back of your dad’s wardrobe. Wear a suit paired with a fedora hat and cigarette (which doesn’t necessarily need to be lit) and go as the father of the atomic bomb come October 31.
Partner Up: Barbie - dress up as the two biggest box office hits of the year and go as Barbenheimer.
Daisy Jones from Daisy Jones & The Six
Amazon’s Daisy Jones and The Six was a huge hit this year, not only for the series’ catchy, sing-along tunes, but for the incredible ‘70s fashion.
With big sunglasses, fur coats, flared jeans and more crochet than you can count, impersonating Daisy Jones isn’t hard - especially if you’ve got a guitar lying around.
Partner Up: Billy Dunne in similar ‘70s apparel.
NFL-dressed Taylor Swift
The hottest and most unexpected romance of 2023 is no doubt T-Swift and her NFL beau Travis Kelce. And what is even more iconic than her new relo is her epic game-side fashion, which never goes out of Style.
If you’re a fan of the sport or a Swiftie at heart, this costume is an easy wardrobe find. Rock some denim shorts, a Kansas Chiefs sweater and some red lipstick - with a few Taylor Swift lyrics up your sleeve - for a night as America’s sweetheart.
Partner Up: Travis Kelce, of course, whether it be in a football uniform or his quirky, off-the-field fits.
Not only did the story show just how humble, hard-working and kind the former Manchester United player is, but it also showed some great snippets of Victoria being absolute comedic gold.
Chuck your boyfriend in his football kit and rummage in the back of your closet for that iconic LBD to trick-or-treat as Posh and Becks come October 31.
A few months ago, Hailey rocked up to the launch of her new Rhode skincare line in a stunning red dress and matching heels, along with a sickening entrepreneurial, boss b**** energy that has us all wanting to start a business and marry our teen heart-throbs.
However, her now-husband and former teen style icon Justin Bieber wasn’t exactly matching her energy. Wearing a grey hoodie, grey shorts and a pink hat balanced on top of his head, these two are the perfect example of why you always ask “What are we wearing?” in the group chat, for fear of becoming a walking meme.
Easy to create? Check. Iconic? Check. Halloween material? Check.
