By JOY COWLEY
Todd's friend Abby lived with her parents and grandmother across the hall from Todd and his dad. Abby's family agreed that number thirteen was supposed to be unlucky, but they didn't know why, either. "It's just one of those things," they said.
Abby and Todd went from floor five, where they lived, to check out floors twelve and fourteen.
"You know something, Abby?" said Todd. "The lift takes longer to go from twelve to fourteen."
"You think it slows down?" asked Abby.
"Either that, or there really is a floor thirteen in between," said Todd.
"A mystery floor!" cried Abby.
They looked at each other. "Let's try the stairs," they said together.
