Italian tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano is slowly recovering from serious injuries he suffered in an attack at his family's villa in Kenya.
Di Stefano, who returned to Italy last week and is in hospital in Milan, has woken from a coma, an official at the San Raffaele hospital said.
The 83-year-old retired tenor was struck on the head by unidentified assailants last month at his house in Diani, about 435km south-east of Nairobi. He was defending his wife as the assailants tried to steal her necklace. His wife needed 16 stitches to her head.
