IN
Ubud Bali is just around the corner from our flat, so despite it being forecast as one of the coldest nights of the year a trio of us decided to go in and order in person rather than ring up. A warning sign greeted us at the door in the form of a friendly but very insistent woman saying we really should order off the new Chinese menu.
But we didn't come to Ubud Bali to get Chinese food - although as things transpired, perhaps we should have. Several Balinese staples were off the menu, including the gado gado, which unfortunately was discovered by a woman dining in with her boyfriend only after they'd ordered, paid and his meal had already arrived.
OUT
Our meals didn't take long; then we were strolling home in the frosty air with our plastic boxes nestled inside single-use plastic bags.
THE TAKEAWAY
Ubud Bali appears to be under new management and it's a real shame, because the food quality seems to have gone way down. Our vege laksa was bland, the nasi goreng was more akin to an 11-year-old's first crack at fried rice and the ayam kremes, a chicken dish with rice, managed to be somehow both bland and unpleasant-tasting. Maybe do order the Chinese when you're offered.
