People from Invercargill are the biggest swingers in New Zealand, while Gisborne folk like to have sex in water.

The residents of Whangarei seem to be inspired by the best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey - they don't mind being tied up or whipped.

These are the findings of the Mega Kiwi Sex Survey, commissioned by an adult toy shop and completed by almost 1,500 New Zealanders.

According to the survey, 71 per cent of respondents openly discuss their sexual fantasies with their partners, with Gisborne hosting the highest sharers at 94.4 per cent.

Doggy style, girl-on-top and missionary are the three favourite positions for men and women, while respondents in Timaru were more likely than anyone else to enjoy getting funky standing up.

Invercargill is the swingers capital of New Zealand, according to the study, with 14 per cent of respondents revealing they had shared partners - twice the national average.

Whangarei respondents were the most likely to partake in bondage, at a whopping 47 per cent, while 90 per cent of Whanganui respondents have watched porn with their partner.

Just over 90 per cent of Gizzy respondents have been busy in water, while Queenstown respondents like to make the most of their region's stunning scenery, and are the most likely to get frisky al fresco.
