SOUL DEEP: THE STORY OF BLACK POPULAR MUSIC
The BBC team which made series such as Lost Highway and Dancing In The Street are at it again, this time with a broad-brush look at soul music in particular, and black music in general.
The title is a little misleading if you're expecting a searching examination of the soul genre; the sub-title is a more accurate reflection of where this programme is at.
Tonight's first episode will get musical purists' hackles up straight away when it looks at the birth of soul and contends that Ray Charles was its sole inventor.
And a series that tracks the genre up to modern times and identifies Whitney Houston as a soul singer definitely has credibility problems.
But no matter, sit back and enjoy the footage and sweet sounds of artists such as Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.
