ON THE BUTTON
Kate Sylvester, who officially opened Fashion Week, used humour to underline one of the issues facing the industry.
The popular designer, who withdrew from showing because her business righthand woman Rebecca Wadey is battling breast cancer, told of how as a 15-year-old she had asked her careers officer about becoming a designer and was told New Zealand had none, but she could become a sample machinist.
"Now we've got hundreds, probably thousands, of designers and not a sample machinist to be found."
SEARING SOUNDS
New-age violinist Elena - looking like a female Nigel Kennedy of yesteryear - got the Vertice show off to a splendid sonic start with her classical gypsy tunes. But in the sweltering heat of the Max Marquee it was a case of counting down the bars by the end of her second number.
BEAUTY TIPS
