We're always of the opinion the more fashion streets there are the better. First there was High St, then Ponsonby Rd. Now there's Teed St.
The Newmarket street off Broadway always had potential with shops such as Zambesi, Muse, Unity, Workshop and L'Etage. But there are changes afoot. Workshop has relocated to 219 Broadway on its way to the new permanent address at 18 Morrow St and L'Etage has closed.
The old Workshop site at number 4 has been divided into two stores with High St stores Ruby opening in one and Fabric in the other.
Ruby is aiming to open its doors in the first week of September with its own label, as well as James Jeans, Mimco accessories and the first collection of Madame Hawke.
The label is Ruby girls' Elizabeth Shand and Kate Ashford's second label and is touted as Ruby's older sister. Expect fine tailoring and luxurious fabrics.
Cool denim outfit Fabric, doing a roaring trade in Citizens of Humanity, Earnest Sewn, Dior men's and women's jeans and everything to go with them in High St, is aiming to open a temporary outlet store at the end of August next door. All those old season Sass + Bide, Tsubi, Cacharel, Commes des Garcons, Helmut Lang and velvet pieces will be marked down in the interim before becoming a fully-fledged Fabric store with new season's gear.
Across the road, Kate Sylvester has just relocated her Broadway store to number 1. When Sylvester was originally looking to open a Newmarket store, she wanted to be on Teed St but nothing was available. When she saw this, she acted and likes the quieter aspect. Her new summer range Night of the Iguana is in-store along with Sydney designer Roberta Glass' lingerie, vintage-look hand-beaded jewellery from Teresa Ruiz and the Australian spa range Ginger & Smart's candles, hand creams and bath treats.
Further down the road in the former L'Etage shop at number 35, new store Drop Dead Gorgeous opens tomorrow. The brainchild of Karyn Beadle, a former advertising and public relations dynamo who also did some fashion design on the side, the beautiful store is mostly black and white with a black chandelier, velvet-covered ottomans and pale pink dressing rooms.
More exciting though, are the international labels she's stocking, most of which are British and European such as Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Gharani Strok, Jane Wheeler, Missoni and Twinkle, with the emphasis on Chloe.
What's more, Beadle has managed to get her hands on Chloe's Paddington and Silverado bags - two of the bags of the year with waiting lists the world over.
One snag: the parking was always good on Teed St. It won't be now.
