Did somebody call for a webslinger? Spider-Man: The Movie is a huge hit in theatres around the world so we were never going to have long to wait before this game was released.
After enjoying some success a year or two ago with a highly polished Spidey title that starred the comic's creator Stan Lee for the original PlayStation, developers Activision have come up with an even better game that follows the film's plot closely.
Released simultaneously across several platforms, I checked out the game for PlayStation 2 and GameCube. The two are identical but the graphics look clearer and more detailed on the GameCube.
The early levels depict a young Peter Parker as he comes to terms with his new abilities, so expect plenty of awkward web-slinging, wall-climbing and a lot of clowning from the young super hero as he works his way through each boss en route to a showdown with the Green Goblin.
Arcade-style action is the order of the day, and it's fast paced and constant, whether it involves swinging through the skyscrapers of New York City chasing the gang that murdered his uncle or being locked in a deadly battle with a psychotic super villain.
Spider-Man is capable of performing a number of fighting moves, many involving his web. Others are as basic as performing kick and punch combos. There are more than 20 levels to fight through, and the game offers good longevity. The best of the levels are set outdoors and allow you to fight bad guys while leaping and swinging between buildings.
Here, the amazing Spider-Man is truly in his element and although the title never reaches great heights, it is better than most games that were born on the big screen. Spider-Man fans will almost certainly not be disappointed.
