KEY POINTS:
The village of Parihaka in Taranaki was the home of Te Whiti O Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi, who preached non-violent resistance during the land confiscation of the late 19th century. The Parihaka International Peace Festival, January 5 to 7, celebrates that stance. Bands and DJs will entertain on three stages, and there'll be dance, theatre, poetry, film, craft, art, food, forums and workshops. Parihaka Pa is just off Surf Highway 45, 40 minutes' drive from New Plymouth. Tickets online or through Ticketek.
