The parents begin to lose their composure as the box gets ripped to pieces as the two crack it open and figure out what's actually inside the box. Instead of finding the much-wanted piece of hardware … they come across random items such as a book and a boot.
By now the parents have completely lost it and are in hysterics as one son storms out of the room while the other searches needlessly inside the box hoping to find a hidden compartment.
The cruel prank however has divided social media with many believing the move went too far, while others couldn't help but see the parents side of things and laugh along.
Since being uploaded by Sportscenter, the video has been viewed more than 800,000 times and received more than 9,000 retweets and 27,000 likes at the time of writing.
Cameron Foxx on Facebook summed it up perfectly: "It's funny and messed up at the same time. I'm pretty sure their parents got it for them being that they have the box. May just make them wait til Christmas."
Thad Malley wrote: "I wouldn't want to be these parents when they get older … Instead of assisted living they're going to be living in a sewer with master splinter."
Chris Allen wrote: "That's just wrong, some kids might never bounce back from that type of trauma."
Steven Michael wrote: "Greatest moment in sports this year. Glad sportscenter could bring it to us."
Bleacher Report Gaming posted the video with the caption: "This is heartbreaking."
The original video which was uploaded to Instagram by Cory Lawson has received more than 60,000 views with followers also split on the prank. Many however believing the sons will be receiving the gift come Christmas Day due to the parents having the actual box for the gaming console.
"PS5 Prank … I can smell it. We let our teenage, video game obsessed sons open an early Christmas gift and they thought they hit the lotto. 'It smells like glory. It smells like a controller'. Watch the entire video. Even their little sister was in on the prank. We are in tears," the caption read.
All we know is this is one present unwrapping these two boys will never forget.
