I have a bit of thing for eye makeup. It started around the age of 13 when I would smudge blue chalk on to my eyelids, line my eyes with a black felt tip, and gloss up my lips with Nivea to strut up and down the main street of Hastings on a Friday night. It's what all the cool kids did. From Bon Marche to the burger bars and back again, we'd stroll, as many times as we could until mum came to pick us up. I won't mention that I was too shy to make those eyes connect with any of the boys who were also being cool.
Our eyes are a window to the soul, so the saying goes, and I like my soul to sing. Eye drops help. Ideally you want your whites to look, well, white. I use Visine, which is so effective it can even give the whites a blue tinge.
But for really smoky eyes, I sought the online experts at a website called ehow.com. It has the how-to on everything from making an exfoliation mask, to tying a Windsor knot to using the new fandangled Google Wave. To make my eyes "pop" and "bring men to their knees if done correctly", boasts the introduction - and I scribbled down the recipe. Here's an overview: You'll need three shades that go from light to dark.
If you have blue eyes try grey, deep blue, black and purple. For hazel or green eyes try plum, brown, purple and khaki. Those with brown eyes may want to try bronze, khaki, brown, beige and tangerine. Any eye colour will look great with navy, charcoal and a silver sparkle.
Apply the lightest shade to the brow bone and upper part of the lid. Take the middle tone from your lashes to your crease and blend the two. Apply the darkest colour along the lashes, using your finger to smudge it up, add more under your lower lashes. Garnish with eyeliner and mascara and serve. Smokin'.
