Sony Computer Entertainment's action platformer Sly Raccoon is as charming a title as you could hope to see. In the best traditions of Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog, this PS2 exclusive is packed with fun and diverse gameplay, all presented in the cool cel-shaded style.
It tells of Sly Cooper, the last in a long line of rodent master thieves. Sly's light-fingered father, grandfather and other lawbreaking loved ones compiled a journal known as the Thievius Raccoonus which is jammed with clues and tips.
The game gets under way with the murder of Sly's father and the theft of the priceless book by a dangerous gang of crooks who split it into five parts, dispatching each to the farthest corners of the earth.
With the aid of his lifelong pals, Bentley (a brainiac turtle) and a giant pink Hippo named Murray, Sly must recover all the missing sections of the book and avenge his father's death.
Apart from Sonic and Crash, Sly Raccoon includes a few less likely influences such as Metal Gear Solid, and just like Solid Snake, Sly is equipped with some innovative gadgetry as well as a hi-tech cane.
At key points during the game, Bentley will offer advice and guidance on how best to progress. Some of the levels are tough and trial and error become routine.
Players are also constantly forced to learn new moves in order to advance, keeping the game fresh all the way through.
The linear gameplay is traditional platforming and involves puzzle-solving, with accurate jumping, boss battles and the collection of coins and various items — but it's the beautiful cel-shaded visuals that set Sly Raccoon apart from its peers.
The game actually looks like a cartoon only you're completely in control of the lead character — which for any young gamer (and a good percentage of the older ones) will be a dream come true.
