Dad had to study. He had this big exam coming up and needed peace and quiet, so Mum put us in the station wagon and took us out of his hair. Con and Me.
"Where are we going?" we asked.
"Surprise!" she said. We love surprises, so we sat on our curiosity and settled down for the drive.
"Mrrreeeow." Curiosity wasn't the only thing we'd sat on.
"Mum, Johnson's in the car too. Looks like he's coming with us."
"Wha-?" said Mum, turning her head to have a look. The car did a little dance towards the centre of the road so Mum quickly turned back to face the front.
"Mmm. Well, I hope cats like surprises too."
Con looked over at the bag of night gear spilling off the front seat. "Dad would've forgotten to feed him anyway," he said.
"Hey, perhaps Johnson guessed that. He's a smart cat."
"When it comes to his dinner, yes he is. Make yourselves comfortable kids, the best surprises take a while to get to."
