Scott put down the phone. `Mum can't get home tonight,' he said. `Her sister is sick. So I'm on my own.'

`Yay,' I said. `We can watch videos all night.'

Scott picked up his cat, Singenpoo. `No way, Rhys,' he said. `Something terrible has happened. That's why I asked you over.'

Singenpoo jumped out of his arms and went to the window. She began to meow in a sad way.

`It's Major Mac,' said Scott. `He's rounding up all the stray cats and taking them to the pound.'

`Singenpoo's not a stray,' I said.

`I know,' said Scott. `But there are hundreds of cats in the pound. No one wants them. They are all going to be ...'

He didn't seem to be able to say the words.

`Put down,' I said slowly.
