The Library Association celebrated the launch of its Library Week today with the release of a shortlist for its annual children's book awards.
The Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (Lianza) offers the awards for distinguished contributions to children's literature.
The winners of the four award categories -- fiction, illustration, non-fiction and te reo Maori -- will be announced in Auckland on September 6.
The nominations are:
Fiction - Ken Catran, Jacko Moran Sniper; Ted Dawe, Thunder Road; Brian Falkner, Henry and the Flea; V M Jones, Juggling With Mandarins; V M Jones, The Serpents of Arakesh. Book One: The Karazan Quartet.
Illustration - Russell Clark and Pamela Allen, Grandpa and Thomas; Gavin Bishop, The Three Billy Goats Gruff; Graeme Gash, Napoleon and the Chicken Farmer (text Lloyd Jones); Mallinson Rendel, Ali Teo and Astrid Jensen, Oh Hogwash, Sweet Pea! (text Ngareta Gabel); Pamela Wolfe, Mouse on the Moon (text Richard Wolfe).
Non-Fiction: Andrew Crowe,The Life-Size Guide to New Zealand Wildflowers; Janet Hunt, A Bird in the Hand: Keeping New Zealand Wildlife Safe; Keith Olsen, Pick-Up a Pack: A Guide to Tramping and Camping the New Zealand Way; Simon Pollard, I am an Insect; Te Aorere Riddell, Toroa: The Royal Albatross.
