Sauron

Sauron (unknown): the Dark Lord who lives in the land of Mordor in his fortress of Barad-dur.

Like Gandalf and Saruman, originally a Maia or spirit, he has troubled the world since the First Age, originally as the chief servant of the first evil lord Melkor or Morgoth and then as the Dark Lord in the Second Age.

He was defeated at the Battle of Dagorlad and at Mt Doom the ring was cut from his hand by Isildur.

His spirit was vanquished, only to reform and grow in the Third Age.

When the story opens he is a major threat nearing battle readiness and is seeking the One Ring to give him ultimate power.
