HENDERSON TO HOLLYWOOD
Judging by the time slot for this reality series about young Polynesian band Spacifix, either TVNZ has more fly-on-the-wall series than it can shake a fly swat at or the powers-that-be consider it doesn't have the mass appeal of primetime fodder, such as The Zoo or Emergency. Either way, it has been dumped into TV2's Saturday afternoon netherworld, just like Tough Act, which followed actors at drama school.
Over nine episodes, we see the nine-member band try to break through in a crowded marketplace with the sound they call "world fresh", a blend of rock, rap, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and funk. Their single Sunshine Day made the NZ charts and the music video received plenty of airplay but the boys have their eyes on making it overseas. Each episode follows the band's preparation for their meeting with American music moguls and showcase gigs in Los Angeles.

ONE FINE DAY
Herald rating: * * *
George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer star as divorcees - each with a child from a prior relationship - who meet up and are wary of each other. Clooney plays a cynical newspaper columnist and Pfeiffer plays an architect who's given up on love. You can guess the rest, but at least it's well-spun and the kids are cute. (1996)
8.30PM, SKY MOVIES 1
MAVERICK

Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner star in this remake of Garner's old TV western comedy. A great sense of fun and a big-name supporting cast, including James Coburn and Alfred Molina. (1994)

THE CLEARING
Herald rating: * * * *
Robert Redford, Helen Mirren and Willem Dafoe star in this drama about a millionaire held prisoner in a forest while his wife tries to organise the ransom money. First-time director Pieter Jan Brugge drags the tension and it doesn't resolve in a nice clean way - so you'll either find it refreshing or disappointing, depending on your expectations. (2004)
