SLEEPY HOLLOW
Herald rating: * * * *
Johnny Depp, as Constable Ichabod Crane, investigates a series of murders committed by a headless horseman, whose ghost has an unholy connection to a wealthy farmer and whose daughter (Christina Ricci) he is falling for. Good ghost story from Tim Burton. (1999)

LOVE ACTUALLY
Herald rating: * *
Eight different couples' lives are interwoven in this dreadfully cloying romantic comedy from writer director Richard Curtis. All the right elements for an English rom-com along the lines of Four Weddings are here, but the demands of getting through all the characters' stories mean there isn't much to be found below the surface. Or on the surface, actually. Stars Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley. (2003)

DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID
Herald rating: * * * *
A bona fide classic and homage to film noir movies, this Steve Martin vehicle, directed by Carl Reiner, uses old footage from films like Double Indemnity and White Heat to push the plot along. Martin plays detective Rigby Reardon, hired by Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward), who is convinced that the death of her father, a prominent cheese scientist, was no accident. (1982)

CLOSER
Herald rating: * *
An erotically charged tale of infidelity and intersecting relationships starring Clive Owen, Jude Law, Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman. It's pretentious and ineffective, but the all-star lineup will convince some viewers. (2004)
