BYRON
In this BBC bodice-ripper, Jonny Lee Miller portrays the poet Byron as the Mick Jagger of the 19th-century literary set, which he undoubtedly was.
His sexual exploits were legend and led to him living away from England for long periods, to leave behind scandalous affairs at home while seeking them out abroad.
If you've ever wondered where the expression "mad, bad and dangerous to know" comes from, one of Byron's lovers used it to describe him.
Byron attacked his poetry with the same energy as his affairs with both sexes. This two-part production picks up the story with Byron a young nobleman embarking on the traditional two-year tour of Europe, where he surrenders to his carnal desires.
On his return to London, he writes the first parts of the narrative poem Childe Harolde's Pilgrimage, to great acclaim.
The flamboyant Byron, at age 23, finds himself debt-ridden but the toast of London society. He is surrounded by adoring women but falls in love with his half-sister, Augusta Leigh (Natasha Little).
Miller plays Byron with a real rock'n'roll swagger and he can certainly identify with suddenly being thrust into the spotlight: his breakthrough role as Sick Boy in the movie Trainspotting came roughly at about the same time as he married Angelina Jolie.
Byron, whose works included the unfinished epic Don Juan, survived all manner of scandals but died in Greece at age 36. He had thrown in his lot with some Greek rebels, funding a refit of their fleet, and was planning on leading a seaborne attack on a Turkish fortress when he succumbed to a fever.
