KIWIS AT WAR
World War II tales of derring-do by New Zealanders are brought to life in this action-packed seven-part series that looks at a different hero each episode.
There are tales of well-known figures such as secret agent Nancy Wake, the White Mouse, and two-time Victoria Cross winner Charles Upham, plus hero pilot Jack Rae, whose story begins the series tonight.
Rae signed up with the RNZAF, desperate to become one of the glamour boys flying a Spitfire. His dream came true and after training in England he ended up on the island of Malta.
After being shot down and rescued, Rae returned to duties in England, until his plane was shot down over France and he was thrown into a notorious prisoner-of-war camp near Berlin - Stalag Luft III, scene of the Great Escape.
He was doing time in the cooler for trying to escape when 77 prisoners made a bid for freedom through a 100m-long tunnel.
While it's great to see gutsy New Zealanders being recognised, you have to think that a golden opportunity has been missed to tell the story of Lance-Sergeant Haane Manahi, overlooked for a VC despite being backed by three generals and a field marshal for the award for bravery.
Manahi received a Distinguished Conduct Medal instead, and recently had some belated recognition from Buckingham Palace but not the posthumous VC his family has been fighting for.
Seeing his story on our screens might have gone a little way towards righting that injustice.
