Based on the true story of bank robber John Wojtowics, who robbed a Manhattan bank in 1972 and got as far as the airport under threat of executing his hostages. Al Pacino plays the bank robber, here named Sonny Wortzik, who holds up a bank to pay for his ex-lover's sex change operation. Things go wrong immediately, when one of the accomplices bails straight away and they then discover that the vault is virtually empty. Sonny gets held up inside the bank which is soon surrounded by a number of film crews and armed police. The remaining accomplice Sal (John Cazale) is nervous that he will be regarded as a homosexual by the media outside.
