Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones star in this hit version of the musical, which in turn was based on a play from the 1920s about two jazz-era killers. Expect speakeasies, prison sentences, revenge plots, more than a few high-kicks and a tap-dancing Richard Gere. (2002)

THE AVIATOR
Herald rating: * * * *
Traces the life of movie producer and aviation nut Howard Hughes from when he produced and directed Hell's Angels in the late 1920s, through to 1946 when he was courting actresses like Ava Gardner and Katharine Hepburn and starting to display symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Hughes, the son of a successful Texan inventor who bought his way into Hollywood, formed aviation company TWA and built the infamous Spruce Goose flying boat. Directed by Martin Scorsese, it's a beautiful looking film and an epic story, but somehow we're still left wanting. The flight sequences are exhilarating, as is Cate Blanchett's performance as Hepburn. But DiCaprio is a casting mismatch, straining to sound more mature and play an older Hughes. A fistful of Oscars were awarded, including Best Achievement in Cinematography. (2004)
