WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE
Herald rating: * * * *
In a similar when-former-celebrities-go-bad vein to Sunset Boulevard, this classic thriller pits screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford against each other. Baby Jane (Bette Davis) is a former child star, consumed by jealousy when her younger sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) becomes a major Hollywood star. But Blanche's career is hindered by a mysterious car accident and Jane, an alcoholic who can't remember a thing about the incident, is held responsible. They live together in a crumbling mansion, representing both their relationship and the deterioration of their minds. Jane is so consumed with hatred that she becomes Blanche's jailer and tormentor. If the kicking scene looks realistic, it's because it is: Bette Davis kicked Joan Crawford in the head so hard that she required stitches. (1962)
8.25PM, TV2
JAWS 2
Herald rating: * *
Every Hollywood star vehicle gets a sequel and Bruce the shark was no exception. Here, a new finned fiend is terrorising the town of Amity and Brody (Roy Scheider) is having trouble convincing the townsfolk of the danger. Followed by Jaws 3 (1983) at 10.50pm. (1978)
8.30PM, TV3
BRIDGET JONES: THE EDGE OF REASON
Herald rating: * *
Renee Zellweger puts on that lovely British accent once more in this totally underwhelming sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary. It jollies itself along with none of the magic of the first film and winds up looking like a pointless and diluted remake. (2004)
8.30PM, MGM SKY DIGITAL
