AMERICAN SPLENDOR
Herald rating: * * * *
Yet another great performance from Paul Giamatti, as underground comics author Harvey Pekar. In 1976, Pekar began publishing an autobiographical comic called American Splendor, allowing his mundane life to be seen and developing an alternative to superhero comics.
The film's strength lies in the characters - it's a refreshing turn for misfits and weirdos to be presented as normal. The real Harvey Pekar intrudes into several scenes, and his friends and companions appear on screen next to the actors.
Pekar still lives in Cleveland, Ohio, where he writes jazz reviews and contributes to the Cleveland Free Times as a columnist. The film-makers supplement this portrait of the man with real interviews, sequences from his comic, and recreate Pekar's appearances on The Letterman Show. (2003)
11.45PM, TV3
