Johnny Depp plays J.M. SCENT OF A WOMAN
Herald rating: * * * *
"You're in no position to disagree with me, boy. I got a loaded .45 here. You got pimples." Al Pacino plays blind retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, who needs an escort so he can go to New York City and rip it up one last time.
Chris O'Donnell plays Charlie, a young scholarship student trying to make some extra money so he can afford to travel. They're both going through their own crisis: Frank wants to end things while Charlie has his own dramas at prep school. While the plot is fairly predictable, the relationship between the two characters - who are each unlikeable in their own way - is where the real friction and resolution lies. A surprise too, that with all the Pacino monologues to choose from in his film career, this sedate comedic drama would be the film to come up trumps. There is, after all, no more concise a Pacino quote than Hoo-hah! (1995)

LIVE FOREVER

Taking its title from the Oasis song, this documentary examines the Britpop phenomenon using a handful of key bands, including Oasis, Blur and Pulp. Both Gallaghers are interviewed, as well as a quizzical Damon Albarn and a straight-up Jarvis Cocker. Liam Gallagher produces the biggest laughs, especially when asked what the song Live Forever is about: "Well, it's about living forever, innit?" (2003)
