THE TAILOR OF PANAMA
Herald rating: * * * *
"When they took out Noriega I said to myself, 'Harry, they got Ali Baba, but they missed the 40 thieves'." Based on John le Carre's best seller, this spy film is set in Panama just after General Noriega was removed from power by the US. The dialogue-heavy story, at first hard to predict, unfolds to reveal a thriller with comedy elements and a sense of the preposterous.
Pierce Brosnan is Andy Osnard, a rogue British spy in exile. Osnard meets Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), a tailor who claims to have Savile Row training but actually has a dark past. Threatening to reveal his secrets, Osnard convinces Pendel to be his informant. Pendel reluctantly becomes a spy and tailors some fanciful stories of government plots, which Osnard happily reports back to his superiors. Their cycle of misinformation has far-reaching consequences which are way beyond their control.
Don't expect a chase-filled spy-movie. Director John Boorman offers up more of a slow and satisfying burn, and Brosnan plays Osnard as a mercenary, disloyal version of James Bond. An old-fashioned, well-crafted film filled with wry humour. (2001)
