VERTIGO
Herald rating: * * * *
It's hard to believe this classic from Alfred Hitchcock was poorly received by critics when it was released. James Stewart plays Scottie Ferguson, a San Francisco police detective who is traumatised by heights and forced into retirement after a colleague plunges to his death. An old friend from his college days hires him as a private investigator to watch his wife (Kim Novak), a depressive who believes she is possessed by the spirit of her ancestor. Scottie slowly becomes obsessed with her and is challenged again by his fear of heights.
Lighting is used to great effect in this complex thriller, becoming brighter or softer to indicate key scenes. Hitchcock also made heavy use of reflections in mirrors to reflect duality. It was Stewart's last film for Hitchcock, who blamed the actor's advancing years for the
initial critical and financial failure of the film. (1958)

A mix and match All Black side struggled for any rhythm against South Africa but you can expect pretty much the same side that disposed of Australia first time round to front tonight. Expect the Aussies to be a lot tougher.
