Ruby and Liam were the most popular names for girls and boys registered with the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages last year, according to the Department of Internal Affairs.
Liam retained the top spot it held from 2010, but Ruby was the number one girls' name for the first time, having ranked third in 2010 and second in 2009.
Joshua is the second most popular boys' name, followed by Oliver, Lucas, William, Noah, Samuel, James, Benjamin and Jack.
The top five most popular girls' names are the same as the previous year, although the order has changed. The second most popular girls' name is Olivia, Sophie, Isabella, Charlotte, Grace, Ella, Lily, Emily, and Amelia.
