Two devil's tongue lilies smelling not-so-sweetly of rotting meat are flowering at the Wellington Botanic Garden's Begonia House.
The velvety black maroon Amorphophallus konjac's stench is to attract flies for pollination, Botanic Gardens visitor services officer Charmaine Scott said. The lilies take about seven years to flower and takes several days to open fully.
"When they do, you can't miss it," Ms Scott said. "This year their double act is really something special -- and they always attract visitors. People seem to enjoy being revolted."
