The Total War series began five years ago in feudal Japan, moved to Medieval times with number two and has gone backwards in time for the third, and best, game.
Like the first two games, Rome: Total War is a mix of two styles: turn-based strategy play and real-time combat.
While the strategy part is the real focus of the game, the battles are spectacular, and players can set up and control thousands of units, giving the game the epic status that its title deserves.
Rome: Total War has had a graphics makeover, and looks nothing short of spectacular, especially the battles which were limited visually in the earlier games.
There are three factions to choose from — the Bruti, Scipii, of Julii, all powerful Roman clans seeking to become the republic's leading faction.
All are tasked with expanding Rome's influence and subduing her enemies. The Bruti must face the Greeks, the Julii take on the barbarian Germanic tribes, while the Scipii tackle the Carthaginians in the southern Mediterranean.
While the ultimate aim is the conquest of Europe, you also get tasks from an implacable Senate. These aren't mandatory, but accomplishing them earns bonuses in cash and new units, which help you to build your power base.
You also get the chance to play as some of the enemy factions, which are unlocked after they have been conquered.
What makes the game special, though, is its depth. There are hundreds of units and different roles, and all play a part in building and consolidating your power base.
It's all about family, though, and you need to make sure you have the range of abilities and line of succession to ensure effective leadership.
As well as trying to achieve your aims through conquest, you can gain control of new territories through trade, espionage and assassination. Remember that the Romans were masters at this sort of thing. Rome: Total War isn't a game for the faint-hearted. Games can last for days, even weeks, which means it is excellent value for money.
