KEY POINTS:
Dressing up to go on stage as a singer in a rock band might sound glamorous. But it isn't always so, says Beth Campbell, lead singer for up-and-coming New Zealand band Atlas, who have just released their debut album and head off on their summer tour this month.
First comes practicality, says the classically trained musician who sang back-up vocals for huge groups like the Beach Boys and Chicago in America before joining brother Ben's band.
"So the first thing I think about is shoes," Campbell says. "Something that gives me some height but that I won't break my ankle in if I trip over the guitar leads. And then I need clothes that breathe, so I don't get too hot under bright lights or in venues with big crowds."
She's also learned that any touring wardrobe needs to be versatile. The boys in the band have been known to complain about the size and weight of her suitcase.
"It's so much easier for them," says the lead singer. "I'm always quite careful about my choices. Because your suitcase is only so big and you have to be able to wear those things during the day, or maybe going out to dinner, but then you also need to be able to wear them onstage."
Her hit pick for anyone planning a rock'n'roll tour, or maybe just a summer holiday with a small bag? "Those long tops that are almost dresses. Because you can wear them belted, with jeans and jandals, or with footless tights and boots at night."
Who are your favourite designers?
Taylor, without doubt! It is a fabulous New Zealand label with shops in Ponsonby and Newmarket. Whenever I want to dress to impress they are my first stop. And it's the kind of place where I can go shopping with my mum and we will both walk out with something absolutely stunning and timeless.
What's your biggest indulgence?
Boots, boots and more boots! And Richfield's chocolate.
Best fashion bargain?
When your best friend has the same size shoes as you and an entire wardrobe full of them to choose from.
What are the best shoes?
I'm a big fan of French Connection shoes (the FCUK label) because of their sophisticated look. Recently, I also found Minx shoes - they're a New Zealand brand, they're heaps of fun and super cute.
The best jeans?
Nobody is great for being a bit rock and dressed up at the same time. And Lee are my comfy, chilling-out faves. Plus you can't get better than Wrangler when you're out on the farm with the horses.
What's the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe?
Those shoe holders which hang. Whoever designed them is a genius.
Your best beauty tip?
M.A.C. I love all the products, not just the makeup. I'm forever finding new things they do which I then can't live without. Every girl should try the exfoliator, it's the best. And if I'm not in the mood to wear makeup, I use the Strobe cream which gives your skin a nice, fresh glow and feels great.
The one rule you always dress by?
Don't wear it if Emma says it sucks. Ha! She's my stylist. I think versatility and comfort are the main rules for me. On stage I need to be aware of comfort and movement as well as style, and while on tour I need to be comfortable enough to sleep in a tour van full of boys. I'm a firm believer in being able to wear garments over and over by just changing them a little to suit the trends.
Most cherished item?
A beautiful amethyst necklace my man brought home from India. I adore it.
Personal style quirk?
I'm a bit of a cowgirl deep down so a bit of country and a little bit of rock'n'roll makes for an interesting combination.
