Chris Martin's band Coldplay was close behind with 6.2 million for their three albums, all released since the start of the millennium.
Singer-songwriter Dido held third place, having notched up 5.7 million sales for her two albums in the past five years, followed by rapper Eminem with 4.7 million albums and Westlife with 4.2 million.
