Cinematographer Alun Bollinger is back in Reefton now that former River Queen director Vincent Ward has taken over post-production of the troubled movie.
Ward developed the story and co-wrote the screenplay.
Filming temporarily halted early this year when actress Samantha Morton took ill then resumed in October when Bollinger took over as director after Ward abruptly left the set.
"I'm staying involved via emails," Bollinger said from Reefton this morning. "Vincent and I are keeping in touch. Obviously he's dealing with material I shot."
Bollinger said he and Ward collaborated after he took over. He tried to work with what he and Ward had talked about and had managed to keep continuity.
An ambitious project with limited time, the hardest thing of all was fulfilling its potential, he said.
He felt he couldn't achieve what was in the screenplay.
"That's not to say the film won't work. . . (you) always compromise."
River Queen is expected to be finished about March though Bollinger said it would probably be released closer to Christmas.
Bollinger said he had no new projects lined up.
"I'm avoiding other projects. In the meantime, I'm working on (stage two) of the Reefton roller park."
Bollinger's other credits include Goodbye Pork Pie, The Piano, Heavenly Creatures and Perfect Strangers.
