"That's enough. Josh is staying here while his parents are in London. Robert can come some other time."
"It won't be the same. We'd made plans. Ple-ea-se, Mum?"
"No. It'll be good for you to get to know Josh."
"Huh, he's a city kid."
"You'll be able to show him the farm. He's brought his dog too."
"Probably a poodle."
"Don't be silly. Now why don't you go and ring Robert and tell him what happened."
What a dork! As if I'd have a poodle. Anything less like a poodle would be hard to imagine. Lying on the floor in the sun, Cav looked like an enormous blob of golden honey. He sprawled out for nearly two metres from the tip of his tail to his front paws.
I closed my book. I didn't feel like reading now anyway. I just felt miserable. Nobody really wanted me.
